The contracts are part of the CSDA program, which aims to purchase commercially available satellite data to augment NASA's own satellite observations and enhance research on climate change, natural disasters, and ecosystem dynamics.
Kuva Space, based in Espoo, Finland, specializes in hyperspectral imaging satellites that can capture detailed spectral information about Earth's surface. This data is valuable for applications such as agriculture, forestry, and water quality monitoring. OroraTech, headquartered in Munich, Germany, focuses on thermal infrared data from its constellation of small satellites, which are designed to detect and monitor wildfires in near real-time. The inclusion of these European firms underscores NASA's commitment to international collaboration and the growing role of commercial space companies in scientific research.
The CSDA program was established in 2016 to evaluate and purchase data from commercial satellite operators for use by NASA-funded researchers. Since its inception, the program has awarded contracts to numerous companies, including Planet Labs, Maxar Technologies, and Airbus Defence and Space. The latest round of awards brings the total number of CSDA providers to over 20, reflecting the rapid expansion of the commercial Earth observation industry.
