The Volkswagen T-Roc has claimed the title of Europe's best-selling car for August 2026, marking the first time the second-generation model has reached the top spot. According to data from Dataforce and Automotive News, the compact SUV secured the number one position exactly one year after its predecessor last held the title.
However, the new T-Roc's victory comes with a caveat. Volkswagen sold 12,185 units of the model during the month, a decline of 17 percent compared to the previous year. The drop suggests that while the T-Roc remains a favourite among European buyers, the transition to the new generation has not been entirely seamless.
The T-Roc pushed last month's leader, the Dacia Sandero, into second place. The Sandero, which had been the most popular car in July, saw its sales fall by 14 percent to 11,996 units. The Volkswagen Golf followed closely in third with 11,752 sales, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volkswagen Tiguan completed the top five with 11,591 and 11,223 units respectively.
The most striking entry in the top 10 is the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which climbed to fourth place. Its strong performance is partly explained by Mercedes-Benz's decision to market both the new electric GLC and the existing plug-in hybrid version under the same name, allowing their sales figures to be combined. Rival BMW takes a different approach, counting the X3 and iX3 as separate models. The iX3 sold 6,444 units to rank 31st, while the X3 did not appear in the top 50, meaning it sold fewer than the 5,147 units needed to match the GLC's combined total. This strategy gives Mercedes a clear advantage in the rankings.
Further down the list, the Tesla Model Y returned to the higher reaches of the European sales charts. After falling to 73rd place in July, the electric SUV rebounded to seventh position with 10,281 sales. The Model Y's volatile performance is notable: it was the best-selling car in Europe in June before its sharp decline the following month.
The rest of the top 10 was filled by familiar names. The Citroën C3 took sixth place with 10,375 units, followed by the Tesla Model Y. The Toyota Yaris was eighth with 9,783 sales, the Peugeot 208 ninth with 9,601, and the Toyota Yaris Cross tenth with 9,600 units.
Dataforce's definition of Europe includes not only the European Union but also the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. This broader scope means the figures may differ from those published by other data providers.
For Volkswagen, the result offers some relief amid ongoing challenges in its home market. The company has faced significant pressures in recent years, but its ability to produce best-selling models remains intact. The T-Roc's first-place finish, even with lower volumes, underscores the enduring appeal of the brand's compact SUV lineup.
Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, can take satisfaction from the GLC's performance, which demonstrates the effectiveness of its combined naming strategy. As European buyers continue to shift towards electrified and hybrid options, the battle for market leadership is likely to remain intense, with Volkswagen, Dacia, and Tesla all vying for the top spot in the months ahead.
