Orlando, Florida, has claimed the top spot in a new WalletHub ranking of the best U.S. cities for coffee lovers, displacing Portland, Oregon, which held first place last year and now ranks second. The analysis of the 100 largest American cities found that the Florida destination, best known for its theme parks, has quietly become the nation's most coffee-friendly city.
Miami ranked third, followed by Long Beach, California, at fourth and Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks, at fifth. Tampa landed at sixth, giving Florida three cities in the top ten. Pittsburgh and Austin, Texas, rounded out the top ten at ninth and tenth, respectively.
The results point to a changing definition of what makes a great coffee city. While 66% of Americans drink coffee daily according to the National Coffee Association, WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said coffee drinkers are increasingly prioritizing affordable, reliable, highly rated shops with free Wi-Fi over trendy cafés. Coffee shops now function as workspaces and social hubs for tourists, students, and remote workers.
Lupo attributed Orlando's rise partly to its tourism-driven economy. Visitors often need a dependable place to charge their phones, connect to free Wi-Fi, and save money before heading to attractions like Disney World. «People want to have a coffee, they may want to go in and scroll for a little while before they hit Disney World, so they want to make the rest of the experience as affordable as they can to spend more of their money on the tourist attraction,» Lupo said.
The presence of the University of Central Florida also plays a role. «There's a lot of broke college kids out there, and they're already spending the little money they have on coffee, so they don't want to have to pay for the Wi-Fi also,» Lupo explained. Cities that attract young adults and college students tended to rank highly, including Pittsburgh, where growing med-tech and tech sectors have drawn young professionals.
Lupo said he was most surprised that three Florida cities made the top ten, alongside Long Beach in Southern California. He suggested the warm climates may lead residents to opt for iced coffee. «Maybe that's how a lot of folks start off their day, drinking a cold iced coffee first thing in the morning,» he said.
WalletHub measured coffee friendliness across several factors, including the price of packaged coffee and cappuccinos, household coffee spending, the share of residents with coffee makers, and the number of coffee shops per capita. The company also weighed the availability of affordable shops with at least 4.5-star reviews, free Wi-Fi, coffee and tea manufacturers, doughnut shops, and local interest based on Google searches.
In cities such as New York, which landed at No. 44, rising coffee prices and pressure on small independent shops may help explain the lower ranking, Lupo said. The analysis also highlighted the financial impact of a daily coffee habit. Households in the most coffee-crazy cities can spend up to $327 a year on the beverage, while frequent espresso and cappuccino drinkers may save by preparing drinks at home.
Lupo noted that several lower-ranked cities, including Laredo, Texas; Toledo, Ohio; Detroit; Memphis, Tennessee; and Lubbock, Texas, are places where residents may have less room in their budgets for coffee purchases. «When grocery costs are at a premium, usually one of the first places you'll cut back [is] things like coffee,» he said, adding that buying a home espresso machine can «pretty much pay for itself in the first couple of months.»
Looking ahead, Lupo said he will be watching to see if Portland can reclaim the top spot. «I think they're going to try to make some changes to put themselves back in that No. 1 spot,» he said.
