The Dominica Meteorological Service has issued a flood watch for the island, warning that heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity could lead to flooding in vulnerable areas. The watch, which took effect on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, remains in force until further notice.

Officials say an active tropical wave interacting with a trough system is producing periods of heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms across the island chain. Rainfall accumulations of up to two inches are possible in some areas, with higher amounts in mountainous and interior locations. The soil is already saturated in several communities following recent rainfall, increasing the risk of rapid runoff and flash flooding.

Residents living near rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as those in low-lying coastal areas, are urged to take precautionary measures. The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) advises the public to avoid crossing flooded roadways and to move to higher ground if water levels begin to rise. Motorists should exercise extreme caution, as visibility may be reduced and road surfaces slippery.

The Dominica Meteorological Service says it will continue to monitor the system and will upgrade the flood watch to a flood warning if conditions deteriorate. A flood watch means that flooding is possible within the watch area, while a warning indicates that flooding is occurring or imminent. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official bulletins and to follow the advice of local authorities.

Fishermen and small craft operators are also advised to exercise caution, as sea conditions are expected to be moderate to rough, with swells of up to eight feet in open waters. The public is reminded that the hurricane season runs until November 30, and that vigilance should be maintained throughout.

The ODM has activated its national emergency operations centre and is in contact with district disaster committees. Shelter managers have been placed on standby. Persons requiring assistance should contact the nearest police station or the ODM hotline.

This flood watch comes as Dominica continues to recover from previous weather events, and authorities are taking no chances with the safety of residents. The government has urged the public to remain calm and to avoid spreading unverified information on social media.

The Dominica Meteorological Service will issue its next bulletin at 6:00 p.m. today or earlier if conditions warrant. Residents are advised to keep monitoring official channels for updates.
