The honorary designation sits at 78th Street and South Shore Drive, in the South Shore neighborhood where Ye grew up and where his mother built much of her life. The stretch of roadway now carries the name of Donda West, a longtime educator who spent decades in Chicago's classrooms before her death in 2007.
Donda West was a professor of English and chair of the English department at Chicago State University, where she taught for nearly three decades. Her academic career and her influence on her son's creative life have made her a recurring figure in his public work. Ye named his 2007 album «Graduation» era label GOOD Music in part around her, and he later titled his 2018 album «ye» and his 2019 gospel project «Jesus Is King» in a period when he spoke often about his mother's role in his upbringing. His 2004 debut album, «The College Dropout», drew directly on her academic world.
The street renaming is the latest in a series of honors that have linked Donda West's name to Chicago institutions and to her son's catalog. A foundation bearing her name has supported education and the arts in the city.
