Curry Barker's follow-up to his breakout horror hit Obsession has landed a theatrical release date. Anything But Ghosts will arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027, distributed by Focus Features and produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
The film is set in the same universe as Obsession but follows an entirely new cast of characters. It is classified as a horror-comedy and centers on two fake paranormal investigators who are finally confronted with actual ghosts, causing events to spiral wildly and terrifyingly out of control, according to an official press release.
Barker's next feature stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, Violet McGraw, Chris Reinache, and Cooper Tomlinson, who appeared in Obsession as Ian, the best friend of the film's protagonist, Bear. Barker himself also stars in the film. Tomlinson confirmed on a June episode of the Raiders of the Lost Podcast that he and Barker play the two phony ghost hunters. He described the movie as «if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary.»
«It's a buddy comedy, you know, about these two guys, and it turns really scary,» Tomlinson said. «You know, it's about these con artist ghost hunters who encounter real ghosts, and then they have to step up and be the thing that they promised this family.» Both Barker and Tomlinson are producing and co-writing the film.
Focus Features holds worldwide rights to Anything But Ghosts, while Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution. This marks the second collaboration between Focus and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster on a Curry Barker film; the two production houses also partnered on Obsession, which released earlier this year to strong reviews.
Obsession became one of the most profitable films in history relative to its budget, earning critical acclaim and status as an instant horror classic. Inde Navarrette's performance as Nikki catapulted her to international fame and helped her land the role of Rogue in Marvel's X-Men reboot. The film's success also put Barker in high demand among studios eager to work with him on future projects.
The chemistry between Barker and Tomlinson, already familiar to viewers of their humorous YouTube videos, is expected to feature prominently in Anything But Ghosts. With established actors like Aaron Paul, known for Breaking Bad, and Bryce Dallas Howard, known for Jurassic World, joining the cast, the film blends comedic and horror elements in a way that recalls the tonal shifts of Hereditary, though with a buddy-comedy framework.
The May 2027 release date places Anything But Ghosts more than a year after its announcement, giving the creative team time to complete production. The film's connection to Obsession suggests it will expand the universe Barker established while introducing new characters and a different genre balance. Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster have not yet announced additional casting or plot details beyond the initial press release.
