Heat Advisory: Dominicans Urged to Take Precautions as Temperatures Climb

The Dominica Meteorological Service has issued a heat advisory for the island, warning residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures and humidity rise.

The Dominica Meteorological Service has issued a heat advisory for the island, warning residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures and humidity rise. The advisory, issued on Tuesday, remains in effect until further notice.

According to the Meteorological Service, the combination of high temperatures and humidity is creating a situation where heat stress is likely, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek shade or air-conditioned environments where possible.

The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) has also issued a reminder to the public to be vigilant and to follow official guidance. «We are urging all Dominicans to take this heat advisory seriously,» said an ODM spokesperson. «Heat-related illnesses can be prevented by taking simple precautions such as drinking plenty of water, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.»

Health officials have noted that symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps. If these symptoms occur, it is important to move to a cooler place, drink fluids, and rest. Heat stroke, which is more severe, can cause a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness, and requires immediate medical attention.

The Meteorological Service is monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to check on neighbours, especially the elderly and those living alone.

This heat advisory comes as the region experiences unusually high temperatures for this time of year. The Meteorological Service has indicated that the hot conditions are expected to persist for the next few days. Dominicans are advised to plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.

In addition to the health risks, the high temperatures can also lead to increased demand for water and electricity. The Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO) has urged residents to use water wisely and to report any leaks. The Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC) has also asked customers to conserve energy where possible to avoid overloads.

The ODM reminds the public that heat advisories are issued to protect health and safety. «We must all do our part to stay safe during this period of high temperatures,» the spokesperson added. «Look out for one another and follow the advice of the authorities.»

For more information, residents can contact the Dominica Meteorological Service or the Office of Disaster Management. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
