Dominica has joined the global community in observing World Teachers' Day 2026, with a national awards ceremony held in Roseau to honour educators for their dedication to the island's schools and students.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, recognised teachers from across the island for their contributions to national development. World Teachers' Day is observed annually on October 5, commemorating the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

In his address, the education minister praised the role of teachers in shaping the nation's future, noting that despite challenges faced by the education sector, educators continue to serve with commitment. He highlighted ongoing government investments in school infrastructure, teacher training, and curriculum development.

The ceremony also featured testimonies from students and former students who spoke about the impact of their teachers. Several educators received awards for long service and excellence in teaching.

Dominica's observance of World Teachers' Day reflects the island's emphasis on education as a foundation for national progress. The Ministry of Education has in recent years focused on improving literacy and numeracy, integrating technology in classrooms, and expanding access to early childhood education.

Teachers' unions have used the occasion to call for continued dialogue on salaries, working conditions, and professional development. The government has indicated its willingness to engage with unions on these matters.

The ceremony concluded with a call for communities to support teachers and to recognise their role beyond the classroom. Similar observances were held in schools across the island.
