Dominica's Kalinago heritage will take centre stage from September 11 to 19 as the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment partners with the Kalinago Council to host Kalinago Week 2026.
The week-long observance celebrates the culture, traditions and daily life of the Kalinago, Dominica's Indigenous people, and is positioned as a national event that invites residents and visitors alike to engage directly with the community.
The full programme of activities will be unveiled at a media launch on Friday, September 11, at 10:00 a.m. at the Kalinago Barana Aute. Speakers will include Hon. Cozier Frederick, Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment; Mrs. Anette Sanford, Kalinago Chief; and Mrs. Alice Charles, Kalinago Development Officer.
Representatives of the Ministry of Tourism, the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and other partner agencies are also expected to attend the launch, signalling a coordinated effort to promote the event across the island and beyond.
The Kalinago Territory, located on Dominica's rugged northeast coast, offers a distinctive setting for the week's activities. Organisers say it provides residents and visitors with a rare opportunity for direct engagement with the community, its history, language, cuisine, craft and daily life.
Throughout the week, the Ministry of Tourism and the DDA will amplify scheduled events across Discover Dominica's platforms, sharing content that showcases this heritage to a wider audience. The collaboration underscores the Kalinago people's integral role in the nation's identity and tourism appeal.
