Needle in a Haystack creator mocks clones with joke Find the Original Game mode

The developer of the viral indie game Needle in a Haystack Simulator has added a satirical mode after his concept was copied many times, with AI tools making cloning easier.

The creator of the viral indie game Needle in a Haystack Simulator has responded to the flood of copycats with a joke of his own. NasNakarus announced a satirical mode called Find the Original Game, in which players must pick the real title out of a pile of fake cases labeled Needle in a Haystack Clone, with the clone label printed in a bright red box.

The developer posted about the idea on October 27, along with a short demo of how the mode would look. He wrote, « Our needle in a haystack game has been cloned so many times we made a new game mode. » Players noted that the fake pile would be easy to sort through, but the bigger point of the post was that the developer felt the need to comment on the clones at all. It is not clear whether the mode will actually be added to the game.

The episode reflects a wider problem in the games industry. Advances in artificial intelligence have made it easier for people to reverse-engineer video games and copy projects that have not yet been released. Small studios without money for legal action, and solo creators who built their games alone, are among those most exposed. The concept behind Needle in a Haystack is simple, which makes it easy to imitate, and online marketplaces currently contain many similar titles.

Needle in a Haystack Simulator is not yet available. It is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, with playtests set for the week of the announcement. Some users said clones may have taken advantage of that unreleased status, while others pointed out that the idea is simple enough to be copied almost by nature.

The developer's post drew replies from fans. One described the situation as a tragicomedy, a moment where it is unclear whether to laugh or cry. Another suggested a version set on Roblox in which players would have to search for a specific Roblox game.

The broader trend of AI-assisted cloning goes beyond single titles. Modders have used the technology to port games to web browsers, to combine games, such as placing Spider-Man into Batman: Arkham Asylum, and to create new games based on existing intellectual property. Some developers have taken legal action against such mods, while others have publicly supported the trend.
