Isar Aerospace has secured a contract to launch a German-built imaging satellite for Planet's subsidiary, marking a milestone for Germany's domestic space capabilities.

Isar Aerospace, a German launch startup, has won a contract from Planet Labs Germany to launch an Earth-imaging satellite, demonstrating an end-to-end space capability for the country. The mission, announced this week, will use Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket to deploy a satellite built by Planet's German subsidiary, further integrating Germany into the global commercial space supply chain.

The contract represents a significant step for Isar Aerospace, which is developing the Spectrum launch vehicle to serve the growing small satellite market. The company, based in Ottobrunn near Munich, has been working toward its first orbital test flight and aims to provide dedicated launch services for small and medium satellites. Planet, a leading operator of Earth observation satellites, has a fleet of over 200 CubeSats and small satellites that provide daily imagery of the planet for agriculture, mapping, and environmental monitoring.

Planet Labs Germany, headquartered in Berlin, has been expanding its operations in Europe, focusing on satellite manufacturing and data services. The German-built satellite for this mission will be assembled and tested at Planet's facilities in Germany, leveraging local engineering talent and supply chains. This arrangement highlights a growing trend of international collaboration in the space industry, where European subsidiaries of U.S. companies contribute to local space ecosystems.

Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket is designed to be a two-stage, liquid-fueled vehicle capable of lifting up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. The company has secured multiple contracts from European and international customers, including the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and other commercial entities. Its Spectrum rocket uses a proprietary engine called Aquila, which burns liquid oxygen and propane, a cleaner-burning fuel compared to traditional kerosene-based propellants.

The launch contract with Planet is part of a broader push by European space startups to capture a share of the small satellite launch market, which is dominated by SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Rocket Lab's Electron. Isar Aerospace competes with other European launch companies such as Rocket Factory Augsburg and HyImpulse, both based in Germany, as well as France's MaiaSpace and the UK's Orbex. The European Space Agency (ESA) has been actively supporting these startups through programs like Boost! and Commercial Space Transportation Services, which provide funding and technical assistance.

Planet Labs Germany was established in 2015 and has grown to become a key hub for satellite manufacturing within the company. The subsidiary has contributed to the design and production of several generations of Planet's Dove and SuperDove satellites. By building satellites locally, Planet can tap into German engineering expertise and streamline its supply chain for European customers.

The specific launch date for the mission has not been announced, but it is expected to occur after Isar Aerospace completes its first orbital test flight, which is anticipated in the coming months.
