Dominica will observe National Heroes Day on Monday, October 5, 2026, with a programme honouring citizens who displayed extraordinary courage during Hurricanes Erika and Maria, including community rescuers, volunteers and public servants who risked their own safety to save others.

The national observance, a central fixture of the island's Independence season, will begin with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Roseau Botanic Gardens in the morning, followed by a church service and a cultural performance celebrating Dominica's kweyol heritage. Government officials, opposition representatives and members of the diplomatic corps are expected to attend.

This year's commemoration carries particular weight as Dominica continues to rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and the earlier damage caused by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015. The heroes being recognised include ordinary Dominicans who formed rescue teams, sheltered neighbours and distributed supplies in the days after the storms, often before official assistance could reach their communities.

In the Kalinago Territory, where Erika and Maria caused severe damage, local leaders will hold their own tribute to honour the resilience of indigenous communities. Similar ceremonies are planned in Portsmouth, Grand Bay and other villages across the island.

The Office of Disaster Management has reminded residents that the observance also serves as a moment to strengthen preparedness for future hurricane seasons. Officials have encouraged families to review their emergency plans and ensure they know the location of their nearest shelter.

National Heroes Day is a public holiday in Dominica, and schools, government offices and many businesses will be closed. Public transport will operate on a limited schedule. The Dominica Meteorological Service has forecast fair weather for the day, with a slight chance of afternoon showers.

As the island marks another Independence season, the focus remains on the quiet courage of those who, in the darkest hours of the storms, became the first responders in their own communities. Their actions, officials say, embody the spirit of the Nature Isle and the enduring strength of its people.
