Milo Yiannopoulos, the British far-right political commentator and former Breitbart News editor, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana. The arrest took place on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued on Friday.
A DHS spokesperson said Yiannopoulos legally entered the United States in May 2019 but chose to overstay his welcome in violation of the country’s laws. The 41-year-old British national had reportedly been issued a final order of removal after overstaying his visa but failed to appear for a scheduled immigration appointment. His mugshot has since been released, showing the commentator in custody.
Yiannopoulos, who also served as an intern for Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and as chief of staff to rapper Kanye West, has been a polarising figure in US political discourse. He rose to prominence as a technology editor at Breitbart News, where he became a leading voice of the alt-right movement before being forced to resign in 2017 following the resurfacing of videos in which he appeared to condone paedophilia. He later apologised and denied the interpretation of his remarks.
The detention comes amid a broader immigration enforcement push under the Trump administration, which has prioritised the removal of individuals who have violated visa terms or received final removal orders. Yiannopoulos had previously been critical of Donald Trump’s second term, voicing disappointment with the president’s performance in public statements.
His arrest at the New Orleans airport marks a significant escalation in his long-running legal status issues in the United States. Yiannopoulos, who holds British citizenship, had built a career in the US as a provocative commentator and public speaker, often courting controversy with statements on race, gender, and Islam. He was banned from Twitter in 2016 for inciting harassment against actress Leslie Jones, though the account was later restored.
The DHS statement did not specify where Yiannopoulos is currently being held or what immediate steps will follow his detention. Immigration proceedings for individuals with final removal orders typically lead to deportation, though legal challenges can delay the process. Yiannopoulos has not yet commented publicly on his arrest.
His detention has drawn attention from both supporters and critics, reflecting his enduring status as a divisive figure in American political life. The case also highlights the strict enforcement of immigration rules for public figures, who are generally subject to the same visa requirements and removal procedures as other foreign nationals.
