The mission, designated Starlink 17-39, lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at 10:05 a.m. EST, marking another step in the company's effort to build a massive satellite constellation for global broadband internet service.
The launch came after an unusual abort on Tuesday, when the countdown was stopped with just seconds remaining before liftoff. SpaceX did not immediately disclose the specific reason for the abort, but such holds are typically triggered by automated safety checks that detect an anomaly in the rocket's systems, ground equipment, or weather conditions. The company later confirmed that the vehicle and payload were healthy, allowing for a 24-hour turnaround.
The Falcon 9's first-stage booster, designated B1082, was making its fourth flight. After stage separation, the booster successfully landed on the droneship «A Shortfall of Gravitas» stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. This landing marked the 100th successful recovery of a Falcon 9 first stage on that particular droneship, underscoring the reliability of SpaceX's reusable rocket technology.
The upper stage of the Falcon 9 deployed the Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit approximately 65 minutes after liftoff. The batch includes a mix of v2 Mini satellites, which are designed to provide higher bandwidth and reduced latency compared to earlier versions. SpaceX has now launched more than 7,000 Starlink satellites since the constellation's debut in 2019, with thousands currently operational.
The Starlink network is a key component of SpaceX's business strategy, generating revenue that helps fund the company's ambitious projects, including the Starship spacecraft and the Artemis lunar program. The constellation serves customers in over 100 countries, offering internet access to remote and underserved areas.
