Battlestar Galactica Board Game Returns in New Edition

Ghost Galaxy has struck a deal with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to publish a new edition of the long out-of-print Battlestar Galactica board game, with a crowdfunding campaign set to launch early next year.

The long out-of-print Battlestar Galactica board game is coming back. Ghost Galaxy has entered into an agreement with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to publish a brand-new edition of the coveted title, with a crowdfunding campaign set to launch early next year.

The original game, first released in 2008, was built around imagery from the Sci-Fi Channel reboot of the series. It became a favorite social deduction and hidden traitor game, capturing the tension of the show in which anyone could be a secret Cylon agent working against the single mission of the humans: to get home. The game went on to receive three expansions before it went out of print nearly a decade ago.

Since then, the title has become something of a holy grail for board game collectors. A full set, including the base game and all three expansions, can easily cost more than a thousand dollars on the secondary market. That scarcity has kept demand high among fans who missed the original release or who are looking to complete their collections.

Details on the new edition remain scant. The announcement describes it only as a «new edition» that will feature an «updated design,» without specifying what those changes will entail. Overseeing the project will be Christian T. Peterson, the CEO of Ghost Galaxy and formerly the founder and CEO of Fantasy Flight Games. Peterson is also the creator of Twilight Imperium, a game with a devoted following of its own.

The return of Battlestar Galactica follows a similar effort from Fantasy Flight Games, which recently launched its Vault Series with Arkham Horror Remastered. That line seeks to bring back much-loved titles in updated form, and it remains to be seen whether the new Battlestar Galactica edition will be part of that series or stand apart, given that it is being officially published by another group.

In 2021, Fantasy Flight Games released Unfathomable, a reskinned version of the Battlestar Galactica formula that replaced the Galactica with a boat and the Cylons with Lovecraftian horrors. That game has found success as well, but it did not satisfy fans who wanted the original title back in print.

The campaign page for the new edition will be launching soon, giving fans their first clear look at what the updated design will include. For now, the announcement offers a rare second chance at a game that has been out of reach for many players for nearly a decade.
