Digital Map of Roman Roads Challenges the Myth of Perfectly Straight Highways

A new digital reconstruction of the Roman Empire's road network reveals that its roads were not uniformly straight, with topography and technology shaping their paths.

A vast digital reconstruction of the Roman Empire's road network is upending centuries-old assumptions about its design. The study, published in Nature Communications, found that Roman roads were not uniformly straight but instead followed the contours of the landscape, with straightness largely limited to flat regions where the terrain allowed.

«All roads lead to Rome? They are all straight? We still walk Roman roads in the region today? These are widely held assumptions, even among academics,» said Tom Brughmans of Aarhus University in Denmark, who led the research. The new analysis, based on a map of nearly 300,000 kilometers of roads in AD 150, provides the first continental-scale test of these beliefs.

The team used topographic mapping, satellite imagery, and historical sources to build the network map, which is more than double the length suggested by previous data. They then analyzed the roads' slope, elevation, orientation, and straightness, comparing the results with modern transport networks.

The findings show that Roman roads were mostly straight only in lowland areas of western Europe and North Africa. In mountainous regions, they were less straight than modern roads, likely due to topographic constraints and technological limitations. Modern roads tend to be straighter because they are designed for faster car travel.

Despite the winding paths in some areas, the Romans prioritized accessibility. About 90 percent of the roads had a slope gradient gentle enough for animal-driven carts and wagons, including routes through the Alps. «This suggests that the Romans were dedicated to maintaining and improving overland accessibility and connectivity on an empire-wide scale,» Brughmans said.

The study also challenges the proverb that all roads led to Rome. Instead, provincial capitals served as key crossroads, mediating overland communication within their regions. Major public and military roads acted as critical arteries for moving goods, people, and ideas at the provincial level.

The research further examined how Roman routes influenced later transport networks. Some post-Roman cultures maintained the same roads into modernity, while others did not. According to Brughmans, the reasons vary widely, from the Industrial Revolution to local decisions such as a town opting not to have a railway station, which could lead to depopulation and reduced investment in roads. «Our results suggest there are thousands of these stories to be told,» he said.

Ray Laurence of Macquarie University in Australia, who was not involved in the study, noted that the correlation between ancient and modern networks shows that «in some ways, the Romans created the future geography of Europe.» However, he pointed out a limitation: the road network developed over 600 years, but the study does not fully account for temporal changes.

The digital reconstruction offers a new perspective on Roman engineering, revealing a system that was pragmatic and adaptive rather than rigidly geometric. It also highlights how ancient infrastructure continues to shape the movement of people and goods across Europe and beyond.
