AI Models Predict Great Lakes Water Levels and Explain What Drives Them

Researchers trained eight machine-learning algorithms on 40 years of data from Lakes Superior, Michigan, Erie and Ontario, then used game-theory techniques to reveal which climate factors drive water levels and when. The models trace next summer's lake levels to snow that fell months earlier, but Lake Ontario defied prediction because of human dam decisions.
