The Elon Musk story is bigger than genius or villainy

The celebrity narrative turns every Musk project into a referendum on one man. The technology looks different when hype, failure and public utility are separated.

Elon Musk is one of the few technology executives whose products arrive with a ready-made movie plot. The rockets are about humanity becoming multiplanetary. The cars are about ending the age of gasoline. The robots are about abundance. The brain implants are about restoring lost human abilities. Even a charging plug can become part of a civilisational story.

That storytelling power explains both the size of Musk’s fan culture and the force of the backlash against him. Once a founder becomes a character, every new product is treated as evidence for or against the character. A successful launch proves genius. A delayed car proves fraud. A political controversy retroactively changes the meaning of an engineering project.

The products are more interesting when removed from that script.

Start with the most famous broken promise. At Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, Musk predicted more than one million robotaxis in 2020 and described cars that would no longer require people to pay attention to the road around the middle of that year. Tesla had already said in 2016 that its new vehicles were getting the hardware needed for full self-driving.

That future did not arrive on schedule. Tesla’s own 2026 support material says FSD (Supervised) requires active driver attention and does not make a car fully autonomous. NHTSA opened an investigation in 2025 into reports of traffic-safety violations with FSD engaged.

But the sequel is not ‘nothing happened’. Tesla said in the second quarter of 2026 that Robotaxi was operating in seven major metropolitan areas, with different supervisory arrangements, and that Cybercab production had begun. NHTSA also said the 2026 Model Y became the first car to pass a new set of advanced driver-assistance tests. The original 2020 prediction was wildly early; the underlying technology has still moved forward.

The Roadster is a cleaner example of how Musk’s product theatre can outrun the product. The second-generation sports car was unveiled in 2017 with deliveries promised for 2020. In mid-2026 Tesla still listed it in design development. The prototype created years of cultural presence without becoming the customer product originally scheduled.

Solar Roof had a similar cinematic quality. The concept made solar generation look like architecture rather than equipment. Musk once talked about reaching roughly 1,000 installations a week. On August 24, 2026, Tesla stopped selling the premium roof tiles through its website. The visual idea survived much better than the promised scale.

Those misses matter because they shape how an audience perceives the next demonstration. Optimus may become a useful humanoid robot. In 2026, however, Tesla said the product was not yet commercialised at the end of 2025 and that first-generation production lines were still being installed. Neuralink’s human work is scientifically more mature than a stage robot but medically much earlier than the transformation implied by futuristic discussion: its PRIME study is an early-feasibility trial with a small planned enrolment and years of follow-up.

SpaceX provides the best warning against turning scepticism into another kind of mythology. Musk’s 2017 Mars schedule put cargo ships on Mars in 2022 and crewed ships there in 2024. That did not happen. Starship was still an experimental programme in 2026.

Yet SpaceX is also responsible for a system NASA certified for regular human spaceflight. Crew Dragon now carries astronaut rotations to the International Space Station, while Dragon cargo missions deliver research and supplies. The missed Mars date and the real spaceflight achievement coexist.

Starlink makes the duality even harder to compress into a personality story. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has said that Musk’s rapid activation and delivery of Starlink at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion was crucial to national resilience. FEMA has used Starlink units to support first-responder communications after a hurricane. Those are ordinary people and public institutions using private technology when other networks fail.

At the same time, a communications system controlled by one company can become a point of political dependence. Ukraine and SpaceX have had to coordinate authorisation of terminals, and the Financial Times has reported on the company’s approval role in some military uses. The very thing that makes Starlink valuable — a globally managed private satellite network — also gives its operator unusual influence.

Tesla’s less glamorous infrastructure may ultimately have more lasting public value than some of its headline products. The company’s charging connector was standardised by SAE International as J3400, allowing a Tesla-developed interface to become an open industry standard. Tesla also deployed tens of gigawatt-hours of battery storage, a technology the International Energy Agency considers useful for grid flexibility and renewable integration.

None of this requires treating Musk as the sole inventor. Engineers, public agencies, suppliers, factory workers and customers built these systems with him. It also does not require ignoring regulatory history. The SEC charged Musk in 2018 over his ‘funding secured’ statement; he and Tesla settled, paying $20 million each without admitting or denying the allegations. Tesla has also settled environmental enforcement matters in California.

The celebrity version of Musk asks viewers to pick a side before looking at the machine. The more useful approach is the reverse.

A Crew Dragon capsule can be a major achievement even if a Mars timetable failed. A charging standard can be valuable even if a Roadster is six years late. Starlink can save communications and create a governance problem at the same time. A robotaxi service can be real while an earlier promise of a million cars remains dramatically unfulfilled.

That makes the Musk story less emotionally convenient, but more accurate. The future is not built by a hero montage or destroyed by a villain edit. It arrives as hardware, standards, failures, lawsuits, revised dates and systems that either work for people or do not.
