BMW is reportedly set to drop the split tailgate on the next-generation X7, according to a Reddit user who claims to work at the company's Spartanburg factory in South Carolina. The alleged insider has also described the styling, powertrains and cabin of the flagship SUV, which is codenamed G67. The claims have not been confirmed by BMW.
The most significant detail concerns the tailgate, a defining feature of the current G07. The source says it will be replaced by a conventional one-piece design. BMW made the same change when it launched the new X5 earlier this year. If the X7 follows suit, the far more expensive Rolls-Royce Cullinan would be the only product in the BMW Group still using a split tailgate.
The source suggests the G67 will not fully adopt the Neue Klasse design language. The front end is said to look closer to the current X7, with conventional, fairly large kidney grilles flanked by split headlights. Spy photos of prototypes suggest the full-size SUV will resemble the facelifted 7 Series. The insider claims the second-generation model will be slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, though no exact dimensions were given.
At the rear, the new car will borrow more heavily from the outgoing G07, but with slimmer taillights and the one-piece tailgate. The Reddit user also claims pre-production of an ALPINA version, the G69, has already started. Both the BMW and ALPINA versions are reportedly to be offered with combustion engines as well as electric powertrains.
Inside, the dashboard and centre console are said to resemble those of the new X5, while the rear passenger area will take technology from the 7 Series. Listed features include a front-passenger display and a fold-down rear entertainment screen, which the source says is optional on the BMW and standard on the ALPINA. The new X7 is also said to get touchscreen panels in the rear doors, along with the 7 Series' automatic doors. These upgrades suggest BMW intends to push the X7 further upmarket. With the X5 losing its third row, buyers with larger families may have to step up to the X7.
BMW has officially confirmed that the next X7 will arrive in 2027, with production planned at its Spartanburg plant. Reports point to a September production start, which would make a summer reveal plausible. The current SUV has already entered the 2027 model year in the United States, so its successor should be sold as a 2028 model. The exact equipment list and market availability remain unknown, and BMW has not said whether any of the features described will be standard or optional.
The automaker has also said it is considering a larger SUV specifically for the North American market, which has revived speculation that the long-rumoured X9 could become a reality. Nothing has been confirmed, but if BMW adds a model above its current flagship, the G67 may eventually share the spotlight with a bigger sibling. For now, the insider's account offers an early and unofficial look at a model that will be central to BMW's larger-SUV strategy.
