Honda and Nissan have announced a new joint development agreement that will see the two Japanese automakers work together on standardised software and electronic control units (ECUs) for future vehicles. The partnership is designed to lay the groundwork for next-generation software-defined cars, with the first models using the jointly developed technology expected to arrive in the 2029 fiscal year, which runs from April 2029 to March 2030.
The agreement aims to standardise multiple ECUs that form the core of future software-defined vehicles, including the in-vehicle operating system and key parts of the middleware. The companies will also share vehicle control software. While much of the underlying technology will be hidden from view, future infotainment systems are likely to have a great deal in common, though minor tweaks such as special graphics may be used to differentiate Honda and Nissan systems.
The announcement follows the collapse of merger talks between the two automakers last year. At the time, both companies noted they would continue exploring other opportunities to work together, and this agreement represents the first major outcome of that commitment. The deal does not involve the larger Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, although Reuters has reported that Mitsubishi is considering joining the software and ECU tie-up.
In a joint statement, the companies said that standardising foundational technologies will enable them to leverage their combined engineering expertise and development resources to improve efficiency, accelerate innovation, and enhance competitiveness through reduced development costs and greater economies of scale. The automakers also hinted at faster development cycles, which are increasingly needed in a competitive global automotive landscape.
Honda and Nissan have indicated they will not stop at ECUs and software, saying they will continue to explore opportunities for collaboration across a range of areas. The partnership reflects a broader industry trend toward shared development of core vehicle technologies as automakers seek to manage the rising costs of software-defined vehicle architecture and electronic systems.
