BMW has offered the clearest glimpse yet of its first-ever iX4, posting a short teaser video on social media that appears to showcase an M Performance version of the upcoming electric crossover. The clip, which highlights M-specific mirrors and yellow lights, suggests the iX4's world debut will include the rumoured iX4 M60 variant alongside standard models.
The iX4 represents BMW's latest expansion of its Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform and marks a significant shift for the company's X4 nameplate. When it reaches the market, the iX4 will effectively replace the combustion-powered X4, which ended production in 2025 without a direct successor. BMW has confirmed that no gasoline equivalent of the new model is planned, cementing the transformation of the swoopy SUV formula into a purely electric proposition.
Technical specifications for the iX4 M60 are expected to mirror those of the recently announced i3 M60 sedan, another M-flavoured model from the Neue Klasse era. A dual-motor xDrive setup is anticipated as standard, delivering more power than the 463 horsepower and 645 Newton-metres of torque produced by the i3 and iX3 50 xDrive variants. The iX4, codenamed NA7, will share its underpinnings with the new iX3 but adopt a dramatically different profile behind the B-pillar, with spy shots revealing a more aggressively sloped roof that creates a fastback-like silhouette.
The timing of the teaser aligns with BMW's production schedule. The company has already confirmed that another Neue Klasse model will enter production at its Debrecen plant in Hungary this autumn, with sales starting before the end of the year. First deliveries are expected to begin early next year. The iX4 is widely believed to be the model that will roll off the Hungarian assembly line, where BMW already operates a three-shift schedule to meet strong demand for the iX3.
Visually, the iX4 is expected to share much of its front-end design with the more upright iX3 before diverging sharply towards the rear. The sloping roofline is a deliberate choice, sacrificing some cargo space and practicality in favour of a sportier appearance — the defining characteristic of the X4 lineage since its introduction.
Looking further ahead, BMW is not ruling out a full M version of the iX4. A model codenamed ZA7 could potentially feature a quad-motor setup borrowed from the upcoming M3, signalling the company's intention to extend high-performance electric options across its range. The i3 Touring and iX3 crossover are also slated to receive M Lite and full M treatments, underscoring BMW's broader strategy of electrifying its performance lineup.
The iX4's arrival forms part of a rapidly expanding family of Neue Klasse crossovers. BMW has moved swiftly to electrify multiple body styles, and the iX4 adds another option for buyers seeking a blend of electric propulsion and distinctive design. With production imminent and sales set to commence before the year is out, the iX4 will soon take its place alongside the iX3 as a cornerstone of BMW's electric future.
