The engine emerged from the companies' joint powertrain venture, which was established to share development costs and pool engineering expertise across their respective brands. While the partners have not yet named the specific models that will receive the unit, the technology is aimed at vehicles intended for extreme terrain and flood-prone environments, where water crossing has long been a limiting factor for petrol and diesel engines.

Conventional combustion engines struggle in deep water because their air intakes sit low in the chassis, and water ingress can cause catastrophic mechanical failure through hydraulic lock. Electric vehicles, by contrast, have no air intake and can wade with relative ease, which has given battery-powered off-roaders an advantage in this niche. The new Geely-Renault unit addresses that weakness directly, allowing the engine to keep running even when the vehicle is fully submerged.

The development is part of a broader push by both automotive groups to differentiate their line-ups through engineering capability rather than purely through styling or price. Renault has been expanding its rugged vehicle offerings in markets such as South America and Africa, while Geely has been investing heavily in advanced powertrain research as it seeks to compete with established Western and Japanese manufacturers on a global scale.

Industry analysts note that the ability to wade through deep water has practical applications beyond recreational off-roading. Military vehicles, emergency services, and agricultural machinery all operate in conditions where flooded roads and river crossings are routine obstacles. A combustion engine that can handle such conditions without modification could give manufacturers a selling point in government and fleet tenders, where reliability in adverse environments is a key criterion.

The announcement follows a period of intense collaboration between Geely and Renault, which have been pooling resources in areas ranging from hybrid systems to shared vehicle platforms. The partnership is seen as a way for both companies to spread the rising cost of developing new powertrains while maintaining their independence as brands. Neither company has indicated when the waterproof engine will enter production, but the technology is understood to be at an advanced stage of testing.

The move also highlights the continuing relevance of internal combustion at a time when much of the industry's attention is focused on electrification. While battery-electric vehicles dominate headlines and showroom growth in Europe and China, combustion engines remain the backbone of global vehicle sales, particularly in emerging markets where charging infrastructure is sparse.
