Brandon Aiyuk Returns to 49ers Facility as Rift With Team Persists

Brandon Aiyuk returned to the San Francisco 49ers facility on Friday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan dismissed the idea of a meeting, saying the matter has been over for the team for a long time.

Brandon Aiyuk returned to the San Francisco 49ers facility on Friday, and the reception he received appeared unwelcoming, underscoring a rift between the receiver and the franchise that has lasted more than a year. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was dismissive when asked about a potential meeting with Aiyuk, saying the matter has been over for the team for a long time.

The dispute has deep roots. Aiyuk tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee during the 2024 season, and the injury ended his year after he had caught 24 passes for 374 yards. After the injury he skipped rehabilitation, and the team responded by voiding the remaining guaranteed money on his contract extension. Aiyuk has not yet returned to the field, and he now says he is healthy and is seeking reinstatement to the NFL.

Team officials have signaled that they do not expect him back. General manager John Lynch previously said he does not anticipate Aiyuk playing for San Francisco again. Aiyuk remains under contract even as he seeks reinstatement. In December the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left team list after he stopped attending the team facility, a move that followed the breakdown in his relationship with the club. His return on Friday did little to change the tone between the two sides.

The split is striking given what Aiyuk provided on the field. In 2023 he recorded 1,342 receiving yards, 75 receptions, and seven touchdowns, production that helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl that season. Those numbers made him one of the more productive pass catchers on a team with championship aspirations, which is why the current standoff has drawn so much attention. The gap between his on-field value and his current standing with the organization is at the center of the dispute.

Several questions remain open. It is unclear whether the NFL will grant Aiyuk reinstatement, and it is unclear whether he will ever play for San Francisco again. For now, the receiver is still under contract with a team whose leadership has made clear that it considers the chapter closed, leaving his football future dependent on a league process that has yet to play out.
