Tesla’s latest Cybercab event has done little to settle the uncertainty surrounding the vehicle’s production timeline, with the announcement focusing on the robotaxi network rather than the customer deliveries that were originally promised. The event, held on 3 September, confirmed that the Cybercab would be added to Tesla’s existing Robotaxi service within geofenced areas, but it offered no new details on when the vehicle might be sold to private buyers.
The lack of clarity has reignited debate about the company’s public commitments, particularly after a high-profile bet made by technology creator Marcus Brownlee, better known as MKBHD. In the wake of Tesla’s October 2024 “We, Robot” event, where the Cybercab was unveiled alongside the Optimus robot and the Robovan, Brownlee publicly doubted Elon Musk’s claim that the vehicle would reach customers for under $30,000 before 2027. So confident was he in his scepticism that he offered to shave his head live on camera if Tesla proved him wrong.
Musk responded to the challenge on X with a laughing emoji and the words “Gonna happen,” but the September event suggests otherwise. Rather than announcing customer sales, Tesla used the occasion to integrate the Cybercab into its Robotaxi network, a move that protects Brownlee’s hair for now but does little to address the broader questions about the vehicle’s commercial future. The original timeline, which Musk himself admitted was optimistic, had promised high-volume production before 2027.
Since the reveal, Tesla has released incremental details about the Cybercab, including an expected range of around 300 miles, the use of large castings to reduce manufacturing costs, and a projected price of $30,000 or less. In February, the first Cybercab rolled off the company’s production line in Texas, leading some to believe the project was ahead of schedule. That progress, however, has not translated into a clear path to customer sales, and the latest event has done little to clarify the situation.
Brownlee has acknowledged that Tesla may be ahead of its time with the Cybercab, even as he questions the company’s timelines. He has also said he expects self-driving cars to become more mainstream within the next decade, a view that aligns with Tesla’s broader ambitions even if the immediate milestones remain uncertain. Regardless of the outcome of his bet, Brownlee has confirmed he will donate to Cancer Research in January.
The Cybercab’s design, which draws inspiration from the Cybertruck and notably lacks a steering wheel and pedals, has made it a focal point of Tesla’s driverless car ambitions. Yet the gap between the company’s public statements and its operational reality continues to widen. The September event, while significant for the Robotaxi network, has left unanswered the central question of when, or even whether, the Cybercab will be sold to customers at the promised price.
For now, the vehicle exists as a component of Tesla’s ride-hailing service rather than a consumer product. That distinction matters, as it shifts the Cybercab’s role from a personal vehicle to a fleet asset, a change that has implications for how the company measures success. The event may have generated headlines, but it has not resolved the fundamental uncertainties that have dogged the project since its unveiling.
