Netflix's 'East of Eden' Ending Explained: Cathy's Fate and Adam's Final Word

Netflix's seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden,' from showrunner Zoe Kazan and starring Florence Pugh, ends with Cathy's morphine death, Aron's death in France, and Adam uttering the Hebrew word 'timshel' to Caleb. Here's what happens to each character.

Netflix's seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, from showrunner Zoe Kazan, concludes with a series of devastating turns for the Trask family. The miniseries stars Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, and Mike Faist as Charles, alongside Joseph Zada as Caleb and Joe Anders as Aron. All seven episodes are available to stream now.

Cathy's arc ends in darkness. After coming face-to-face with her two sons, Caleb and Aron, she retreats to her room and sinks deeper into paranoia, plagued by voices from her past. Believing she is speaking with Charles, she says, «something happened to me when I was five years old» — a line that implies childhood abuse without ever explaining it explicitly. Inspired by her love of Alice in Wonderland, Cathy describes carrying her own «drink me» potion that would make her «disappear.» She then downs a bottle of morphine. A young version of Cathy, dressed as Alice, crawls through the fireplace. She is later found dead in her chair inside the brothel, and her will leaves everything to her son Aron.

Aron and Caleb's story ends in tragedy. After Caleb shows his brother who their mother really is, Aron disappears and enlists in the army to fight in Europe. From abroad, he sends a letter to his girlfriend Abra, played by Zoe Phillips, ending their relationship and telling her not to speak with his family. Abra breaks that rule, realizes her feelings for Caleb, and goes on a date with him; they kiss. When they return, Caleb is greeted by a morbid-looking Lee, played by Hoon Lee, who tells him his brother has been killed in France. The shock of Aron's death causes Adam to suffer another stroke.

Adam is left bedbound after the second stroke. Wracked with guilt, Caleb admits to his father that Aron joined the army after he showed him Cathy at the brothel — an act of petty revenge. While Caleb believes he is responsible for his brother's death, Adam, struggling to speak, manages to utter a single word: «timshel.» As Lee explained earlier, timshel is a Hebrew word meaning «thou mayest,» a validation of human free will to choose good or evil. The choice of word suggests Adam does not hold Caleb responsible, since everyone has the right to choose. The final scene shows Caleb lying in bed with his father, leaving it unclear whether Adam survives the night.

The adaptation, created by Zoe Kazan — known for roles in The Big Sick and Revolutionary Road — also features Ciarán Hinds. Unlike the 1955 film version, which omitted the character of Lee, the Netflix series keeps him, casting Hoon Lee in the role. The ending's ambiguity around Adam's survival and its use of «timshel» as a final statement on free will have become a focal point for viewers parsing the finale.
