Diablo 5 Enters Full Production, Blizzard Confirms 2029 Launch

Blizzard's Diablo 5 is already in full production and will launch in 2029, taking players to a Sanctuary where Diablo has won and the world has fallen into apocalypse.

Blizzard's Diablo 5 is already in full production and is scheduled to launch in 2029, the game's director confirmed during an exclusive sit-down at BlizzCon 2026. The announcement marks the biggest reveal for the franchise at the event, arriving alongside a wave of new content for Diablo 4 that includes Season 15, a Netflix series, and a Switch 2 port.

Game Director Joe Shely, Narrative Director Jennifer Helper, and Production Director Tiffany Wat outlined a sequel that moves the series into uncharted territory. Diablo 5 is set in a world where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won. The fate that players have spent years trying to prevent across earlier Diablo games has come to pass. Other heroes rose up, attempted to stop Diablo, and failed. Diablo now sits on the throne of Westmarch and has conquered the entire Western continent.

To tell that story without cutting short the ongoing narrative of Diablo 4, the developers have jumped the timeline a hundred years ahead. Helper said the shift gives Diablo 4 room to continue its own story and development while the team builds the sequel. She also made clear that the Lord of Terror will be central to the new campaign. «We're bringing Diablo back and Diablo should never be an 'and another thing' in a Diablo game,» she said. «We need a full campaign and full story based around Diablo.»

Wat described the project as a chance to lean into technical and gameplay innovations, including what she called more classes than have ever appeared in a Diablo game. The team is also bringing back the procedural world that was popular in earlier entries and was leaned into with Diablo 4's dungeon system. In Diablo 5, that approach extends to both the overworld and dungeons. Shely has emphasized constant discovery and the importance of not knowing what is around the corner, an element of danger that ties directly into the apocalyptic story.

The open-world structure of Diablo 4 will not carry over in the same form. Because Diablo and his Dread Commanders have destroyed Sanctuary, there are no more towns. Players will gather a caravan of survivors and move from region to region, which the developers said allows them to show what Sanctuary looks like under the Lord of Terror and how the Dread Commanders have twisted different parts of the world. Wat praised the monsters team, noting that Joe and she have worked together on monsters for over a decade.

Support for Diablo 4 will continue even as the sequel moves forward. Shely said the game remains fully supported by its team, with the Amazon class, the Season of Hell's Legacy, and the Switch 2 version all on the way. Wat added that dedicated teams exist for each Diablo game because they remain important to the community, and that those teams collaborate closely. «I think it's the best time to be a Diablo fan,» she said.

Shely also addressed how the growing ARPG market influences development. He said the team plays everything related to Diablo or that could show what players are enjoying, but the focus stays on what Diablo does best: evolving the combat model, remaining approachable, and delivering an incredible campaign. «We want this to be our best campaign ever,» he said, pointing to the crunchiness of Diablo 2 as an inspiration. With Diablo 5 now in full production and a 2029 release window set, Blizzard is positioning the sequel as both a return to the franchise's roots and a major step forward.
