Paris has deployed a permanent night-shift brigade of apartment inspectors who measure every square meter of every dwelling in the city, working in three rotating teams so that no centimeter of real estate is ever left unmonitored while its owners sleep.
The new Square-Meter Vigilance Corps, staffed by 1,200 former tax auditors and retired surveyors, began its round-the-clock patrols on Monday, entering flats through pre-arranged access hatches to re-measure living rooms, kitchens, and hallways with laser calipers calibrated to the nearest millimeter. Each inspector files a color-coded report every four hours, and any apartment whose measured area deviates by more than two square centimeters from its official registry is immediately flagged for a full re-inspection at dawn.
«We cannot allow a single square meter to go unaccounted for while the market is awake,» said Corps Commander Hélène Duval, standing in a hallway lined with measuring tapes. «If a studio apartment shrinks by even a handbreadth overnight, the entire price index for the arrondissement is compromised.»
The initiative has already spread to Lyon and Marseille, where inspectors have begun drilling small observation ports in walls to verify that no room has been secretly expanded during renovation work. Property owners have responded by hiring their own night guards to watch the inspectors, and the city has announced plans to train a second brigade dedicated solely to monitoring the monitors.
«We are prepared to measure every apartment in Europe if necessary,» Duval added, adjusting her clipboard. «The price of a square meter must never be allowed to close its eyes.»
