BMW has confirmed that its hydrogen fuel cell SUV, the iX5 Hydrogen, is edging closer to production, with prototypes now undergoing real-world testing ahead of a launch later this decade. The Munich-based manufacturer is targeting a 0-to-62mph sprint in under five seconds, placing the zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle in the same performance bracket as its battery-powered sibling, the iX5 60 xDrive, which completes the same benchmark in 4.6 seconds.
Final power and torque figures have yet to be disclosed, but BMW has confirmed the fuel cell variant will feature xDrive all-wheel drive. One electric motor will drive the front wheels while a second powers the rear axle, a setup that should provide the traction and dynamic balance expected of a BMW SUV. Engineers are said to be paying close attention to driving dynamics, with the stated goal of making the hydrogen-powered X5 feel like a proper BMW rather than simply an alternatively fuelled version of the standard model.
Efficiency, rather than straight-line speed, will be the iX5 Hydrogen's primary selling point. BMW is targeting 466 miles (750 kilometres) of range on a single fill-up under the WLTP cycle. For context, the battery-electric iX5 60 xDrive, with its 141kWh battery, is rated at up to 525 miles (845 kilometres). The hydrogen model carries seven high-pressure carbon-fibre tanks capable of holding up to 7 kilograms of hydrogen, packaged without compromising passenger space relative to the battery-powered iX5.
Refuelling is expected to take less than five minutes once the hydrogen is depleted, making the process nearly as quick as refuelling a petrol or diesel X5. That combination of long range and rapid refuelling is central to BMW's bet that customers will want a zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle without the charging times associated with battery-electric vehicles.
The iX5 Hydrogen uses a third-generation fuel cell system co-developed with Toyota. The new unit is 25 percent smaller than its predecessor, a reduction that should aid packaging and efficiency. Prototypes are being subjected to demanding environmental and operating conditions to ensure the fuel cell, electric motors and associated systems work together as intended.
BMW has been clear that the iX5 Hydrogen remains a prototype for now, but with real-world testing underway, the company's hydrogen experiment is moving considerably closer to showroom reality. The luxury SUV's fifth powertrain option is unlikely to be available until 2028 at the earliest, and it is not expected to be sold globally. Markets without sufficient hydrogen refuelling infrastructure would not make sense for the model, limiting its initial reach to regions where hydrogen availability is more established.
The iX5 Hydrogen forms part of a broader strategy in which BMW will offer the next-generation X5 with five different powertrains in the same body, spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen. Whether hydrogen can become a meaningful alternative to battery power will ultimately depend on infrastructure and hydrogen availability, but BMW is clearly betting that a combination of long range and gasoline-like refuelling times will appeal to a segment of buyers.
For now, the focus is on validation. The prototypes are being pushed through a range of conditions to confirm that the third-generation fuel cell and the dual-motor xDrive system deliver the durability, efficiency and driving character BMW expects. If the testing programme proceeds as planned, the iX5 Hydrogen could offer a credible zero-tailpipe-emission alternative for drivers who value range and rapid refuelling over the charging network that battery-electric vehicles rely upon.
