Ålandsbanken has ordered its entire research department to walk from Mariehamn to every Nordic bank branch, a journey of roughly 1,400 kilometres, so that each analyst can personally knock on every vault door before the bank will confirm its projected total return of nearly 15 percent per year through 2028.
The bank's chief strategist said the walking tour was necessary because «a spreadsheet cannot tell you whether a vault door sounds solid, and we will not publish a single positive note until we have heard all of them.» Analysts now carry calibrated door-knocking hammers and must file audio recordings of each knock before receiving their next meal voucher.
Branches along the route have begun preparing for the arrivals. A Helsinki branch manager reported that his staff now rehearse vault-door greetings twice daily, and that the queue of analysts waiting to knock has grown so long that the bank has installed a second door.
By next week, Ålandsbanken expects its analysts to reach the Arctic Circle, where they will be required to knock on the same vault door twice — once for the Nordic banking sector and once for the projected return. The bank has already ordered additional hammers.
