Buffalo Wild Wings has closed at least 11 restaurants across nine states in early 2026, a move that signals a strategic recalibration for the largest sports bar chain in the United States rather than a broad retreat from its markets. The closures, confirmed by Inc., span Michigan, New York, Virginia, Illinois, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, and Kansas.
The chain, founded in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, has grown to more than 1,400 locations nationwide and ranks No. 1 in systemwide sales in Nation's Restaurant News' annual Top 500 report. Inspire Brands, the parent company of Dunkin' and Arby's, acquired Buffalo Wild Wings in 2018 for roughly $2.9 billion.
In Ann Arbor, Michigan, the downtown location on South State Street closed on May 3 after more than two decades of operation. Manager Paul Creely attributed the decision to broader challenges facing the restaurant industry. “We understand that people don't have as much money to come out and eat, and it's just the nature of the beast,” he told MLive.
Other closures stem from different circumstances. The Buffalo Wild Wings in Hicksville, New York, shut down in late January as part of a mall redevelopment project expected to exceed $100 million. The Arlington, Virginia, location on Crystal Drive also closed, along with outlets in San Jose and Long Beach, California; McHenry and Morris, Illinois; Arvada, Colorado; Buford, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Lawrence, Kansas.
The pattern of closures suggests the company is shedding underperforming restaurants while leaning further into takeout-friendly formats and franchising. Despite the shuttered locations, there is no indication that Buffalo Wild Wings is exiting these markets entirely. The chain continues to maintain a substantial national footprint, and the closures appear targeted rather than systemic.
Buffalo Wild Wings did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the closures or its broader strategy for 2026.
