Toyota Unveils Hydrogen Fuel Cell Hilux for 2027 Dakar Rally

Toyota's Gazoo Racing has revealed the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel cell prototype that will compete in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

Toyota's Gazoo Racing has unveiled the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel cell prototype that will compete in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. The experimental truck, which emits only water, will tackle over 1,000 kilometres of difficult terrain across 13 stages as a testbed for future production models.

The DKR GR FC Hilux is based on the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, the twin-turbo V6 race truck that will also contest the event. While the V6-powered version is capped at 400 hp and 660 Nm of torque by FIA regulations, Toyota has not disclosed the output of the fuel cell electric motors or the estimated range between refuelling stops. The FC retains the custom bodywork and chassis of the original rally truck, including its significantly shorter wheelbase compared to the roadgoing Hilux, high-clearance fenders, oversized grippy tires, and long-travel suspension. It is distinguished by a unique white and blue livery.

Toyota said the Dakar programme aims to develop the technology with a focus on fuel cell downsizing, improved cooling, and enhanced durability. The company has already confirmed it will roll out an FCEV variant of the production Hilux in 2028. The upcoming road-legal truck targets 248 miles of range and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, offering an alternative to the fully electric and mild-hybrid diesel variants.

The Hilux rally programme has been highly successful in desert rallying over the past few years, securing four overall victories at Dakar in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025. However, in the most recent rally of 2026, the Dacia Sandrider claimed the top spot after mechanical trouble sidelined the leading Toyota. The DKR GR FC Hilux will join Gazoo Racing's primary Dakar contender, the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, at the 2027 event.

The hydrogen fuel cell prototype represents a significant step in Toyota's broader strategy to explore multiple powertrain technologies. While battery electric vehicles have gained widespread attention, Toyota has consistently advocated for a diversified approach that includes hydrogen, hybrids, and fuel cell electric vehicles. The Dakar rally, known for its punishing conditions, provides an extreme testing environment for the fuel cell system, which must withstand high temperatures, dust, and rough terrain.

The Dakar Future Mission 1000 category was created to encourage the development of alternative energy vehicles in motorsport. By entering the DKR GR FC Hilux, Toyota aims to gather valuable data that will inform the production FCEV Hilux. The rally truck's fuel cell system emits water vapour instead of carbon dioxide, a feature that could prove useful if the team gets stranded in the desert. The vehicle's performance in the 2027 rally will be closely watched by both motorsport enthusiasts and industry observers.
