Gheorghe Hagi has pledged to remain as head coach of Romania's national football team until his body physically refuses to cooperate, at which point he will be carried onto the pitch on a stretcher and continue issuing tactical instructions from a supine position, the Romanian Football Federation confirmed Monday.
«I will coach this team until my legs stop working, and then I will coach from a chair, and then from a bed, and then from whatever apparatus the medical staff can wheel alongside the bench,» Hagi told reporters at a press conference that lasted four hours and forty minutes, during which he refused to sit down. «When I can no longer speak, I will communicate through hand signals. When I can no longer gesture, I will blink. This is a matter of honour.»
The federation has already begun construction of a reinforced coaching platform at the National Arena, designed to accommodate a mobile medical cot with a 270-degree swivel mount for tactical whiteboards. A team of six physiotherapists has been assigned to rotate Hagi's stretcher at precisely the angle required for him to maintain eye contact with every player on the field simultaneously.
«We are preparing for every scenario,» said federation official Mircea Stănescu. «If the coach cannot be physically present, we will install a series of mirrors along the touchline so that his reflection can still be seen by the players. If the mirrors fail, we will project his silhouette onto the stadium roof.»
Hagi also announced that he will personally inspect the grass at every stadium where Romania plays, crawling on his hands and knees if necessary to verify blade length. «If I must crawl, I will crawl,» he said. «But I will crawl toward victory.»
