A third person has died from malaria in Germany in connection with a rare outbreak of the tropical disease linked to flights arriving at Frankfurt Airport, according to reports. The victim was a resident of Schwanheim, a district just north of the airport, and had not traveled to a region where malaria is endemic.
The death follows that of an airport worker who died from the disease in August. A second German resident also fell ill with malaria. City officials said both individuals had been infected with Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the most severe form of malaria, even though neither had visited a malaria-endemic area and neither had worked at the airport.
The cases are being described as an example of «airport malaria,» a rare phenomenon that occurs when an infected mosquito becomes trapped aboard an aircraft or inside luggage, is carried to a country where malaria is not normally present, and then bites someone locally. Malaria cannot be transmitted from person to person; it is spread only through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Germany's Robert Koch Institute, the national agency responsible for disease control and public health, reported that airport workers began falling ill after contracting malaria between July 4 and July 6. In total, six employees contracted the disease, according to Fraport, the company that operates Frankfurt Airport.
«We have provided comprehensive information to all employees and encourage them to consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms,» the airport operator said.
In July, airport officials set traps around the property in an effort to contain the outbreak. It was not immediately clear where the flights involved had departed from.
The outbreak has drawn attention to the risks posed by infected mosquitoes traveling on international flights, particularly as global travel volumes remain high. While airport malaria is uncommon, public health experts have long warned that mosquitoes carried in aircraft cabins or cargo holds can survive long enough to bite people near airports in non-endemic countries.
Malaria remains one of the world's most serious infectious diseases, with an estimated 249 million cases and more than 600,000 deaths globally each year, according to the World Health Organization. Most of those cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where the Plasmodium falciparum parasite is widespread.
The Frankfurt cases are notable because none of the victims had traveled to a high-risk region, underscoring how the disease can appear in unexpected places. The Robert Koch Institute and local health authorities have not announced additional cases beyond the six employees and the three deaths.
Airport officials have continued to monitor the situation, and health authorities have urged anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, or flu-like illness to seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical in cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, which can progress rapidly and become life-threatening if left untreated.
The deaths have also raised questions about mosquito control measures at major international hubs. Frankfurt Airport is one of Europe's busiest aviation centers, handling millions of passengers each year, and even a small number of infected insects can pose a risk to workers and nearby residents.
While the outbreak appears contained for now, the cases serve as a reminder that infectious diseases can cross borders in ways that are difficult to predict. Health officials have not issued any broader travel advisories in connection with the Frankfurt cases.
