Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 Will Launch Without Microtransactions or Generative AI

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not include microtransactions or generative AI at launch, addressing two major concerns ahead of the game's November release.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch without microtransactions or generative AI, a move that could shield the highly anticipated title from two of the gaming industry's most contentious practices. The studio made the announcement during a conversation with Kinda Funny Games following a preview event for the game's Extended Look presentation.

Kinda Funny's Andy Cortez said he asked Rockstar directly whether players would be able to spend real-world money on in-game purchases. The response, he said, was that there are no monetization systems in the game. Greg Miller, another host at the outlet, followed up by asking whether generative AI was used in development. The team told him there is no AI in the game at all.

The confirmation arrives as generative AI has become a recurring source of controversy across the industry, with titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Arc Raiders facing scrutiny over their use of the technology. For the millions of players who have waited more than a decade for the next Grand Theft Auto, the news removes two potential flashpoints from the game's mid-November release.

However, the microtransaction announcement comes with caveats. While Rockstar has said the game will not feature traditional monetization strategies, the Ultimate Edition will include content gated behind a higher price. That version costs $99.99, a $20 increase over the standard edition, and grants access to cosmetic packs, vehicles, weapons, and exclusive shops such as the Electric Fang tattoo parlor and Stock 305 clothing store.

An official support page confirmed that standard edition owners will be able to purchase an Ultimate Edition upgrade separately. The page said the bonuses are woven throughout the story of protagonists Jason and Lucia, with new items unlocked as players progress through each chapter.

The lack of microtransactions at launch also raises questions about the future of Grand Theft Auto Online. Rockstar has not indicated whether a new iteration of the multiplayer mode will arrive after launch, and the company has remained silent on the subject despite the single-player focus of the base game.

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. The game's extended look earlier this week revealed new details about the story, characters, and licensed soundtrack, along with the return of a familiar Grand Theft Auto Online character.
