Beijing has declared the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games a full Olympic-scale spectacle, with every event from the 100-meter dash to the marathon now mandatory for all humanoid robots manufactured in China. The opening ceremony alone featured 12,000 robots marching in formation, each one required to wave a tiny Chinese flag with its hydraulic fingers.
«We are not here to coddle machines,» said Games director Wei Zhang, watching as maintenance crews doused a smoking Honor «Lightning» robot with fire extinguishers after its sprint final. «These robots wanted to be athletes. Now they will train like athletes, compete like athletes, and if they fail, they will be recycled like athletes.»
The recycling program has already claimed 340 robots, whose limbs and processors were stripped and reallocated to the winners within minutes of their defeats. A new «loser's lane» has been added to the track, where defeated robots are forced to run a consolation lap while spectators throw rubber chickens, a tradition borrowed from provincial village fairs.
Next week, the Games will expand to include synchronized swimming, with robots required to perform underwater ballet routines in the National Aquatics Center. Engineers have been ordered to waterproof all joints by Friday, and any robot that sinks will be retrieved by a team of divers and immediately disqualified.
