Vasile Moldoveanu, the father-in-law of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, arrived at DIICOT headquarters on foot at dawn and informed stunned prosecutors that he would now walk the entire 130 kilometres to Buzău to personally return a sum of money to businessman Răzvan Leu, one coin at a time, because he had been told the money «had to go back» and he did not wish to wait for a bank.
Witnesses said Moldoveanu carried a canvas sack over his shoulder and a laminated timetable of his own walking schedule, which he had already distributed to neighbours in his village. «I will stop in Ploiești for water and in Urziceni for a rest,» he told the DIICOT officer at the gate, according to the timetable. «The money will be returned by Thursday, coin by coin, and I will count each one aloud so nobody can say I kept any.»
By midday, the DIICOT car park had been reorganised into a pedestrian departure point. A local gendarme was assigned to walk the first ten kilometres alongside Moldoveanu for «procedural visibility», and two television crews followed on bicycles. The Buzău businessman Răzvan Leu, informed of the plan, reportedly asked whether he could simply send a car, and was told the offer had been «noted but declined».
Prosecutors, who had summoned Moldoveanu as a witness in the fraud case concerning Călin Georgescu, said the hearing would now be conducted «in motion» along the DN1, with a stenographer jogging behind. The first coin is expected to reach Buzău on Thursday afternoon, provided the wind holds and nobody offers the walker a lift.
