Dell Technologies unveiled its new Round Rock campus expansion on Monday, a facility where all 120,000 employees are now required to personally reboot one assigned server every hour, a regimen the company claims has driven its stock to record highs by eliminating the need for automated monitoring software.
«We realized our data centers were running too smoothly,» said Chief Operations Officer Jeff Clarke, standing in a server hall that now resembles a factory floor. «By replacing our entire remote management system with a mandatory physical reboot rotation, we have instilled a sense of ownership that no dashboard can replicate. Every employee, from the CEO to the cafeteria staff, now carries a laminated card listing their server's bay number and a stopwatch.»
The new schedule, which began at 6 a.m. Monday, requires each worker to walk an average of 4.2 miles per shift between their desk and their assigned rack. The company has installed hydration stations every 200 yards and has hired 300 former marathon runners as pace coaches to ensure employees complete their reboots within the allotted 45-second window. Employees who miss a reboot must wear a yellow vest for the rest of the day and perform the next hour's cycle on a treadmill desk.
«I used to write firmware, now I spend my day pressing a button and watching a loading screen,» said Senior Engineer Priya Nair, who was seen jogging toward bay 7,403. «My productivity is down, but my step count is incredible. The stock surge is just a bonus.»
The company has already ordered 120,000 additional servers to accommodate the new workforce-driven uptime model, and next week it will begin training employees to perform manual memory diagnostics using a series of colored flashlights.
