Italy Decrees Every Museum Must Employ a Full-Time Economist to Measure Beauty in Euros

At the National Festival of Civil Economy, Italy announces that all cultural institutions will now be staffed by economists who will calculate the exact monetary value of every painting, poem, and performance in real time.

FLORENCE — In a move that officials describe as «the final reconciliation of art and arithmetic,» Italy's Ministry of Culture has ordered every museum, theater, and library in the country to employ a full-time economist who will measure the precise monetary value of each cultural experience as it happens.

The economists, known officially as «Impact Officers,» will stand beside every artwork and performance, issuing real-time estimates of the empathy, awareness, and social cohesion generated per visitor per minute. A single visit to the Uffizi now produces a printed receipt listing the exact euro value of the visitor's emotional response, itemized by painting.

«We can no longer tolerate the intangible,» said one festival organizer, calmly explaining that the first Impact Officer assigned to Michelangelo's David has already filed a preliminary estimate of «eleven million euros per meaningful glance.» The officer now works in twelve-hour shifts, measuring the economic impact of each tourist's gasp.

The program has expanded rapidly. The Venice Biennale has installed turnstiles that charge visitors by the unit of aesthetic contemplation. The La Scala opera house now requires economists to sit in the orchestra pit, calculating the GDP contribution of each aria in real time. Rome's Pantheon has been fitted with sensors that convert the sound of footsteps into quarterly growth figures.

«We are finally making culture legible to the market,» the organizer added, noting that the Ministry has begun training a second wave of Impact Officers to measure the economic value of silence in libraries. The first graduating class will be deployed next week to every church in Italy, where they will estimate the euro value of a single prayer.
