Kyiv has officially declared lunchtime drone interception a municipal sport, complete with neighborhood leagues, scoreboards, and a city championship scheduled for the first Sunday of next month, after Russian forces introduced a third daily wave of attacks timed precisely for the midday meal.
«We have moved beyond the era of surprise,» announced Kyiv’s newly appointed Commissioner for Aerial Athletics, Oleh Prykhodko, during a press briefing held in a basement that now doubles as the league’s headquarters. «Our citizens have mastered the morning and evening waves. The 13:00 sortie was the final frontier, and we have conquered it with a structured training regime.»
The new schedule, published by the city administration, divides the capital into twelve districts, each responsible for fielding a team of volunteer spotters and interceptors. The Obolonskyi district has already reported a perfect record, downing seven drones before the first course of borscht was served. «We treat it like a relay,» said team captain Iryna Shevchenko, holding a pair of binoculars and a ladle. «The soup simmers while we track the incoming, and the moment we hear the air raid siren, we switch to defensive positions.»
Restaurants across the city have adapted, offering «alert menus» that can be consumed in under ninety seconds, the average duration of a daytime siren. The Shevchenkivskyi district, where a drone fragment recently damaged a café facade, has installed reinforced awnings that double as observation posts. «We have turned our lunch break into a civic duty,» said one café owner, who now employs a dedicated drone-watcher alongside his barista.
The championship, which will award a trophy shaped like a downed Shahed drone, has drawn interest from as far as Lviv, though officials insist the competition is strictly local. «This is about protecting our city and our appetite,» Commissioner Prykhodko added. «We will not let a third wave ruin our digestion.»
