LONDON — The British Beauty Editors' Council has ordered every nail salon in the capital to suspend all client appointments for the next 90 days and instead rehearse the six approved autumn nail trends on a fleet of 2,000 plaster mannequin hands, which have been distributed to each of the city's 1,200 registered salons.
«We cannot risk a single autumn manicure being applied before the chrome-dusted espresso swirl has been perfected to the millimetre,» said council chairwoman Penelope Ashworth, standing before a wall of mannequin hands each bearing a different iteration of the season's signature «molten bronze» gradient. «These hands will be our canvases, our martyrs, our teachers.»
Salon owners have been instructed to log every rehearsal in a communal ledger, with each hand requiring a minimum of 40 practice coats before it is deemed ready for inspection. The council has deployed a team of 15 inspectors who will visit salons unannounced, armed with magnifying lamps and calipers, to measure the precision of each brushstroke.
«My clients are furious, but I tell them to think of the greater good,» said Priya Nair, owner of a salon in Shoreditch, as she carefully applied a fifth layer of matte topcoat to a mannequin's index finger. «By December, these hands will be so perfect that real women will weep with joy when they finally get their appointments.»
The council has also mandated that all salons display the six approved trend boards in their windows, with a seventh board reserved for «experimental variations» that will be judged at a gala in early January, where the winning salon will receive a trophy shaped like a giant cuticle pusher.
