Dominica has joined countries around the world in observing World Farm Animals Day, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy calling on livestock farmers to place animal welfare at the centre of their operations.

The observance, held each year on October 2, is marked internationally to draw attention to the treatment of animals raised for food and to encourage humane farming practices. In Dominica, the day was used to highlight the role of livestock production in national food security and to remind farmers that healthy, well-cared-for animals are the foundation of a productive agricultural sector.

Officials from the ministry said the observance aligns with Dominica's broader push to strengthen local food production and reduce reliance on imported meat and animal products. They noted that the island's farmers play a critical role in supplying the local market with beef, pork, poultry, eggs and dairy, and that proper nutrition, clean water, adequate shelter and timely veterinary care are essential to maintaining healthy herds and flocks.

The ministry has been working with farmers across the island to improve husbandry standards, offering training and technical support through its extension services. These efforts are part of a wider strategy to boost agricultural output, improve food safety and ensure that Dominican consumers have access to locally produced, high-quality protein.

Farmers in communities from Portsmouth to Grand Bay and the Kalinago Territory were encouraged to review their practices and to seek guidance from agricultural officers where needed. The ministry stressed that animal welfare is not only a moral obligation but also an economic one, as stressed or poorly kept animals produce less and are more susceptible to disease.

World Farm Animals Day is observed on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a noted advocate for animal welfare, and is marked by events and awareness campaigns in many countries. In Dominica, the day formed part of the ministry's ongoing public education programme on sustainable agriculture and responsible livestock management.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting farmers through advisory services, disease surveillance and access to markets, and urged the public to recognise the contribution of livestock farmers to the island's economy and food system.
