Bungie has confirmed that more Destiny games and stories are in development, reversing its earlier decision to end major support for Destiny 2 and crediting the game's community for directly changing its plans. The Sony-owned studio said the franchise remains «foundational» to its future and that it is working to unvault content that had been removed from the game.
The announcement came in a blog post and video in which Bungie addressed the future of Destiny, its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, and changes to how the studio operates. «Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade,» the studio said. «When we announced that Monument of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact.»
The reversal is striking given the timeline. Sony and Bungie said in May that the Monument of Triumph update, which launched in June, would be the last major Destiny 2 update. The content drop produced a significant spike in players as fans urged the studio not to abandon the franchise, but no future Destiny projects were announced at the time. Bungie also had Marathon to focus on, and there was little indication that the campaign would succeed.
Instead of fading, the fan effort intensified. Marathon was hit with a review-bombing campaign in May, and players organized a server takeover that pushed Destiny 2 to its highest concurrent player peak in two years. Fans also flooded both Sony and non-Sony livestream chats, while developers from other games voiced support for Bungie and the Destiny players who faced being left behind.
Social media erupted after the announcement. «Holy s**t. We actually f**king won!» said Destiny and Warframe content creator My name is Byf. «They're un-vaulting content, and are making moves to create more Destiny in the future! We actually did the thing! We made our own fate!» YouTuber MrRoflWaffles wrote, «DESTINY BACK FROM THE DEAD?????» Streamer VesselOfTauCeti said, «I'm actually crying I don't even know how to express how happy this makes me. Destiny has a future again. Marathon is expanding beyond its genre. The future right now looks bright.»
Members of the Bungie team also reacted. Principal comms manager Dylan Gafner said the update came «from the heart» and invited players to send questions about Destiny, Marathon, and Bungie. «Cheers to the future. Guardians make their own fate,» he said. Senior gameplay designer Danny Nanni said the leadership team had made it «incredibly easy to be excited about my job.» Overwatch senior designer Dylan Snyder wrote that he loved the news and was «rooting for the studio hard,» adding that «games are better with a healthy Bungie in the space, and with Destiny around and cooking.»
What exactly Destiny's future looks like remains unclear, including when players will see new content. What has fans talking is that the franchise has a future at all. The studio has had a difficult year: layoffs announced in June were later revealed to have affected hundreds of staff, and the company confirmed earlier this month that it would sublease parts of its large Bellevue, Washington headquarters.
For now, Bungie's message is that Destiny is not finished. The studio said it is «not done with Destiny,» and the unvaulting of pre-Shadowkeep content is already underway. Fans who spent months campaigning for the game's survival are treating the news as proof that their efforts made a difference, even as they wait for details on what comes next.
