The directors of the forthcoming Oasis documentary have explained why they used hidden cameras to capture Liam and Noel Gallagher reuniting for the first time in 15 years. Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, who helmed «Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger», told Billboard that the covert rig was placed in the studio so the band «would never see a single member of the film crew.» Southern added that Liam may not have even realized cameras were present during the first week of filming.
The documentary covers Oasis’ historic 2025 reunion tour, which began on July 4 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and concluded on November 23 at Estádio do Morumbi in São Paulo, Brazil. The tour also stopped at London’s Wembley Stadium, Manchester’s Heaton Park, and Los Angeles’ Rose Bowl. The film captures the band’s rehearsals, live footage from the gigs, and the brothers’ first joint interview in more than 20 years.
Southern and Lovelace said the emotional weight of the reunion gigs struck them most while filming. «When the lights came up at the end of the first concert in Cardiff, we have a sequence where you just see people looking shell-shocked, like they’ve been through every possible emotion,» Southern said. «Seeing that in real time was when we were like, ‘We knew this was going to be big, but it’s on a different level emotionally than what we’d thought.’»
The directors also followed the personal journey of the Gallagher brothers throughout the tour. «Then, as the film progresses, you see the music bringing them together,» Southern continued. «The fan reaction is a huge catalyst in where they end up in terms of their relationship by the end of the film.»
The film will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in early September, followed by a cinema release on September 11. It will hit streaming later this year on Disney+ in the UK.
As for the band’s future, rumors persist about Oasis returning to Knebworth, the site of their record-breaking performances over two nights in August 1996. Reports suggest it could be part of a massive UK and European tour that would include a 12-night residency in Manchester. Rumors have also circulated about the Britpop icons headlining Glastonbury next year, although Liam Gallagher recently shut down those reports in a social media post.
