Charlie Woods's high school in Florida has introduced a mandatory backward walk of its eighteen-hole course for every family member attending a student's college commitment ceremony, officials confirmed on Friday. The rule was drafted after the school's athletic council concluded that a commitment should be celebrated on foot, in reverse, across all eighteen holes.
The first ceremony under the new rule required the entire extended family to begin at the eighteenth green and finish at the first tee. Staff placed reflective cones on every fairway so that the procession could be tracked from the clubhouse. Two groundskeepers were assigned to walk alongside the family with rakes to smooth the bunkers behind them.
"Reversing the route is how we honor the student's next chapter," said the council's chair, Dana Feld, who walked the course twice to confirm the timing. "A commitment is a return to where the game began, so the family must return to where it ends."
Parents who attended the trial described the walk as physically exhausting, but the school has already scheduled three more ceremonies for next month. A cafeteria menu built around sweet potatoes, apples and savoy cabbage will be served at the turn, with trays carried by volunteers on the back nine.
