Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has expanded its electric van line-up with a long-wheelbase version of the ID. Buzz Cargo, adding load space, towing capacity and a range of new features aimed at business users. The extended variant is designed to bridge the gap between the standard ID. Buzz Cargo and larger conventional vans, giving operators more flexibility without moving away from electric propulsion.
The load area is 250 mm longer than that of the standard ID. Buzz Cargo, which translates into an additional 500 litres of cargo volume. The van comes with a wooden floor and a maximum payload capacity of up to 700 kg. The long-wheelbase model also features dual sliding doors as standard equipment. These doors are 190 mm longer than the single door fitted to the short-wheelbase version, allowing them to accommodate a Euro pallet for easier loading and unloading.
Buyers can choose between a traditional liftgate and optional rear wing doors, depending on their operational needs. Inside, the van is available in two- and three-seat configurations. It also introduces a new Innovision infotainment system with an improved app store, a revamped steering wheel, and Travel Assist with traffic light recognition. That system can automatically bring the van to a halt at red lights, a feature intended to reduce driver workload in urban environments.
Volkswagen has also added a one-pedal driving mode and a Vehicle-to-Load function, which allows the van to act as a large battery bank for powering tools or equipment on site. Power comes from an 86 kWh battery pack that can be paired with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive version produces 282 hp, while the all-wheel-drive variant develops 335 hp. Regardless of the drivetrain, the model has a maximum towing capacity of 3,968 lbs (1,800 kg), an increase over the standard model.
German pricing for the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz Cargo starts at €48,490 before VAT, rising to €50,630 for the all-wheel-drive variant. That means the extended model costs around €2,340 more than the regular ID. Buzz Cargo before tax. The move reflects the growing competition in the electric commercial vehicle sector, where manufacturers are pushing to offer practical range and payload solutions for tradespeople, delivery firms and fleet operators.
The long-wheelbase ID. Buzz Cargo is part of Volkswagen's broader effort to electrify its commercial range while retaining the usability that business customers expect. By increasing interior space and towing capability, the company is positioning the van as a viable alternative for those who need more capacity than the standard model provides but want to avoid the running costs and emissions of a diesel van.
With its combination of extra load volume, dual sliding doors and advanced driver assistance systems, the new variant strengthens the ID. Buzz Cargo's appeal in the light commercial vehicle market. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed UK pricing or availability, but the German pricing gives an indication of the premium buyers can expect to pay for the extended wheelbase and additional equipment.
