October Streaming Preview: Carrie, Avatar, and More

October brings a packed streaming slate led by Mike Flanagan's modern-day Carrie adaptation, the finale of HBO's Lanterns, and Netflix's East of Eden from writer Zoe Kazan.

October's streaming calendar arrives with a mix of horror, prestige drama, and superhero spectacle, led by a new adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie from horror specialist Mike Flanagan. The eight-episode Prime Video series, debuting October 7, moves the story into the present day, a shift that changes the stakes for its telekinetic protagonist.

In this version, Carrie White, played by Summer H. Howell, is pulled from home-schooling and placed in a modern high school after her father dies. That means social media, cell phones, and school shooter drills — elements absent from the 1976 film and only lightly touched on in the 2013 remake. Familiar scenes remain, including the shower incident and the prom disaster, but other moments take unexpected turns. Margaret White, portrayed by Samantha Sloyan, becomes an influencer, and the series extends a measure of sympathy to teen bully Chris Hargensen, played by Alison Thorton. The show marks Flanagan's first major project after moving from Netflix to Amazon.

Netflix opens the month on October 1 with East of Eden, an eight-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel. The series is written or co-written entirely by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the famous 1955 film version. Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbott star, but the behind-the-scenes story centers on Kazan's shift from acting to writing. Steinbeck considered the book his greatest work, and Netflix has already placed Kazan in charge of a Lonesome Dove reboot.

HBO's Lanterns wraps its first season on October 4. The Green Lantern series, starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, has built momentum through a time jump to the present day, numerous DCU references, and strong lead performances. The finale's biggest questions are whether the show sticks its landing and how much it sets up Man of Tomorrow and a second season.

Josh Hartnett continues his career resurgence with Below, a six-episode Netflix series arriving October 8. The show follows a small Newfoundland town besieged by what appears to be a sea monster. Hartnett plays a fisherman trying to save Snook's Arm, with Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, and Natasha Henstridge rounding out the cast. Early reviews from TIFF praise the pilot as gorgeously filmed and supremely gory, comparing it to a supernatural Jaws.

Ben Affleck directs, co-writes, and stars in Animals, a Netflix crime thriller debuting October 9. Affleck plays Mark Kimball, a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. He and his wife, played by Kerry Washington, have only hours to raise the ransom, but their money is tied up in his campaign. Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun also star.

The month's slate reflects a broader streaming strategy of pairing established franchises with auteur-driven projects. Flanagan's Carrie and Kazan's East of Eden both reinterpret well-known source material through contemporary lenses, while Lanterns represents a major franchise bet for HBO. For viewers, the result is a crowded October that mixes scares with prestige drama and superhero finales.
