Former Stripper Says Faith Led Her Out of the Sex Industry

Hannah Hirsh spent five years working in strip clubs, drawn by the promise of fast money and glamour. She left, she says, after an encounter with Jesus Christ, and now leads a ministry dedicated to helping other women escape what she describes as a dark and degrading life.

In an interview, Hirsh recounted the realities she witnessed inside the clubs: widespread addiction, drug and alcohol abuse, and even trafficking. She said she herself became entangled in addiction during those years. «A lot of the things that I saw while I was in that life for five years was very dark,» she said. «You see a lot of addiction. I even got involved into addiction myself. You see drugs. You see alcohol… you even see trafficking.»

Hirsh warned that women who enter stripping casually, thinking they can make quick money, often fail to recognize the door they are opening. «You don't realize the door that you're opening, and you don't realize all of the darkness that comes with it,» she said. «This all comes with that lifestyle and just feeling empty inside, feeling dead inside and just going against your morals just for money.»

She attributed her initial entry into the industry to the lure of money, which she said society glamorizes. «I fell into the temptation because of the allure of money… stripping glamorizes and society glamorizes this lifestyle and portrays it to be something it's not,» she said. «If you've actually lived inside of it, you know that while you are doing this, you are not happy.»

Her career ended abruptly when clubs in her area shut down during the 2020 pandemic. That sudden halt, she said, forced her to sit in silence with God, a period she describes as pulling her heart out of the industry and closer to her faith.

«Society makes it seem like this luxurious lifestyle is the goal, but what I have truly learned is the goal is Jesus. The goal is eternal life. That is the true goal. And true riches are found in God,» Hirsh said. «This fast-paced lifestyle is glamorized by society, but it is not glamorous at all. This is coming from someone who lived it.»

She described the daily toll on women in the industry. «Most of the women» in stripping are «on drugs» and «drinking every single day to numb» themselves to their work, she said. «You're constantly being degraded on a daily basis. So, it's not empowering you at all — it's actually belittling you and making you feel less than. But because you are walking away with money, you think that it's empowering you, but just as fast as that money comes is just as fast it goes.»

After reconnecting with her faith, Hirsh founded Kept by Grace Ministry. She now visits strip clubs regularly, aiming to plant seeds of faith and help women leave the sex industry. «What goes through my mind when I go into the strip club is that these women need God… I go in there and I tell them what they need to hear, what God is placing in my spirit to tell them because my job is to just plant the seed, but God is the one that's going to make the seed grow,» she said.

Hirsh also addressed Christians who believe strippers are beyond redemption. «For the Christians that believe strippers are beyond saving, I would say that they don't have a true relationship with the Lord… Jesus sat and ate with prostitutes. Jesus was going to those that the Pharisees were calling too dirty… So for the Christians that believe that strippers are too far gone, I would say that you need to understand the heart of God because no stripper, nobody is too far gone for God. No matter what they have done, God can redeem anybody.»

Her story reflects a broader conversation about the sex industry, faith, and the possibility of redemption. Hirsh presents her experience as evidence that even those who feel trapped in a destructive cycle can find a way out through spiritual transformation.
