The Inbetweeners is returning to the screen with the combination that made the original work: the same four central actors and the same two creators behind the writing.
Netflix announced that production began in the UK on 7 September on The Inbetweeners 3, a feature film continuing the story of Will, Jay, Neil and Simon. Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas will reprise the roles, while Damon Beesley and Iain Morris will write and direct.
The third film arrives after a long break. The television series ran from 2008 to 2010, then moved into cinemas with The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011 and The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014. That twelve-year gap since the second movie changes the premise in an obvious way: the characters are no longer close enough to school age for the film simply to repeat the same adolescent situations.
That may be the project’s biggest opportunity. The original comedy was never really about being young in an aspirational sense. It was about the social panic of not knowing what to say, how to behave or how other people see you. Those anxieties do not disappear with age; they simply move into different settings.
A successful continuation could therefore make adulthood itself the new source of humiliation. Careers, partners, parenting, mortgages, reunions and the pressure to look settled all offer the same kind of gap between how people want to present themselves and what their lives actually look like. The characters were built around that gap from the beginning.
For British popular culture, the reunion also revives a very specific kind of comedy. The Inbetweeners was neither a polished coming-of-age drama nor a fantasy of glamorous youth. Its world was suburban, awkward and ordinary. The jokes often came from the characters’ desperation to escape that ordinariness and their repeated failure to do so.
Netflix is taking on a franchise with a large existing audience, but nostalgia alone will not guarantee an easy reception. Revivals are now common across film and television, and viewers tend to be quick to notice when a familiar title has returned without a reason beyond recognition.
The involvement of Beesley and Morris is therefore significant. They are not merely executive producers lending their names to a reboot; Netflix says they are writing and directing. That gives the film a direct creative line back to the original series and its two movies.
The four returning actors matter for the same reason. The characters’ individual jokes were memorable, but the comedy depended on rhythm between them: Will trying to impose logic, Jay inflating every story, Neil accepting absurdity without resistance and Simon becoming emotionally overwhelmed by whatever crisis was closest.
Netflix has not yet disclosed the plot or a release date. That leaves the central creative choice unanswered: whether the film will chiefly celebrate the past or confront how much time has passed.
Either way, The Inbetweeners 3 is now a real production rather than a reunion fantasy. For a franchise built around men making poor decisions while insisting they have everything under control, returning in middle age may be the most natural setup it could have found.
