The yellow car, the bad decisions and one of Britain’s most durable comedy friendships are coming back. Netflix says production has officially started in the UK on The Inbetweeners 3, a new feature film reuniting the original four leads more than a decade after their last big-screen outing.
Simon Bird will return as Will McKenzie, James Buckley as Jay Cartwright, Blake Harrison as Neil Sutherland and Joe Thomas as Simon Cooper. Just as importantly for fans worried about a revival losing the voice of the original, creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are returning to write and direct.
The announcement makes the project more than a rumor or a nostalgic reunion. Cameras are rolling, the core cast is confirmed and the people who built the series are in charge of the story. Netflix has not attached a release date to the announcement, so the most useful fact for now is simple: the third film is in production.
The Inbetweeners first became a defining British teen comedy during its 2008–2010 television run. Its appeal depended on a deliberately unglamorous version of adolescence: humiliating parties, disastrous attempts at romance, family embarrassment and four friends whose confidence was almost always larger than their competence.
That tone carried into two feature films, released in 2011 and 2014. The movies moved the characters beyond school while keeping the group dynamic intact. A third film now has a different challenge. Will, Jay, Neil and Simon cannot simply be teenagers again, and the comedy will have to find what happens when men known for refusing to grow up actually have had years in which adulthood was unavoidable.
That is also why the return has cultural interest beyond simple franchise recycling. A large part of the original audience watched these characters while going through similar stages of life. Those viewers are now older, with jobs, relationships, children or at least a much longer list of responsibilities. The gap itself can become material for the joke.
For Netflix, the project arrives at a time when familiar intellectual property remains valuable, but audiences are increasingly skeptical of revivals that exist only to reproduce old catchphrases. Bringing back Beesley and Morris gives the film a better chance of feeling like a continuation rather than an imitation.
The casting announcement is equally important. The chemistry between Bird, Buckley, Harrison and Thomas was the engine of the original show. Each character had a distinct comic failure mode — Will’s self-importance, Jay’s fantasies, Neil’s cheerful confusion and Simon’s emotional catastrophes — but the humor worked because the four felt like a real social unit.
What Netflix has not revealed is almost as interesting: the story, the setting, supporting cast and release timing remain under wraps. That leaves open whether the film will lean heavily into nostalgia or use the characters’ age as the starting point for something new.
The safest expectation is that The Inbetweeners 3 will be judged less on whether fans recognize the old group and more on whether the group still feels believable together. The reunion is now official. The next question is what kind of mess four former teenagers can create when they have had more than a decade to know better.
