Charlie Brooker has revealed the title, cast, and first images for his next Netflix series, Blackmere, a project the streamer describes as an absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller. The announcement came during Netflix's UK upfronts presentation in London, where the show was introduced alongside other upcoming titles.
Paddy Considine leads the cast as Detective John Blackmere, a tormented investigator who leaves the rain-soaked northern city of Bleakford for London. According to the official synopsis, he is driven by two goals: avenging his partner's death and catching a ritualistic serial killer before the killer runs out of victims. Lena Headey and Rory Kinnear also star, with Kinnear joining a Brooker production for the first time since appearing in the very first episode of Black Mirror.
Netflix accompanied the reveal with a tongue-in-cheek advisory note stating that the series contains blood and frowning, a joke that signals the show's deadpan tone. The streamer also released first-look images, though a specific premiere date has not been set. Blackmere is scheduled to arrive on Netflix in 2027.
Brooker's relationship with Netflix stretches back to the third season of Black Mirror, which had previously been produced by Channel 4 before moving to the streamer. Since then, he has created several specials for the service and is preparing the mockumentary Cunk On Cinema, a co-production with the BBC featuring Diane Morgan as the satirical interviewer Philomena Cunk. That project has already lined up interviewees including action director Michael Bay and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
The Blackmere announcement arrives as Brooker continues work on the eighth season of Black Mirror, which he said last month had begun shooting and would be more Black Mirror than ever. The two projects share a creator and a home at Netflix, but the new series appears designed to operate in a different register, trading the anthology show's dystopian tech parables for a crime-thriller framework laced with absurdist humor.
When the project was first announced last year, Brooker offered a characteristically irreverent statement. He said he was beyond thrilled to be providing a quote for the press release, joking that he had dreamt of doing so since he was a young foetus. He added that he would pinch himself, but like all of us, he was terrified that doing so might wake him up and reveal that 2025 had all been a magical dream. He closed by asking viewers to watch his show and saying he was begging them.
The casting of Considine, Headey, and Kinnear gives the series a heavyweight British ensemble. Considine is known for leading roles in prestige television and film, Headey for her long run on Game of Thrones, and Kinnear for a wide range of stage and screen work including The Diplomat. Their involvement, combined with Brooker's track record, makes Blackmere one of the more closely watched titles on Netflix's upcoming slate.
